Why Cut Down Caffeine & How Do I Do It?

Caffeine has been a major staple in our lives for as long as we can remember. It started with seeing our parents with their morning cup of joe before heading off to work and that slowly transitioned into our lives as adults. Now we find ourselves unable to get out of bed, commute to our jobs, or interact with others without caffeine. Essentially we are unable to function without a stimulant.

Does 'But first, coffee' sound familiar?

But what if we told you that you are doing your body more damage than good by consuming crazy amounts of caffeine EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Caffeine isn’t just in regular ol’ coffee, it's also in soft drinks (Coke, Sprite, Dr. Pepper), energy drinks (Red Bull, Monster, 5-Hour Energy), coffee alternatives (tea, matcha) and all that can add up.

Why Caffeine Can Be Harmful to your Health

  1.  Too much caffeine can stimulate the nervous system.
This causes your heart rate to race, feelings of restlessness, and tremors/jitters.
  2. Inducing less sleep.
This one is pretty obvious. No caffeine equals more sleep. Sleep is the body’s way of recovering. DON’T neglect it.
  3. Too much caffeine intake can cause increase anxiety.
It has been proven that more than 300 mg of caffeine (a little more than a cup), can induce enxiety. Increased anxiety can lead to panic attacks… that is by far one of the worst feelings ever.
  4. Caffeine can cause irritability and nervousness. Trust us when we say that no one wants to be around a short-tempered person.
Okay, so we have established that caffeine isn’t great for you. So, now what? Well, we have come up with some helpful tips on how to reduce caffeine intake.

SUTRA - Healthy Chai & Cocoa

  1. Gradually decrease how much caffeine you have in a day. We know that sometimes habits are hard to kick (we have been there), but cutting down your caffeine consumption to one cup a day, will help you a ton in the long run.
  2. Swap in SUTRA Black or Gold. Our SUTRA Black tastes like hot chocolate and is made from cacao, red reishi, and activated charcoal while our SUTRA Gold has turmeric, ginger, and maca root and tastes like a chai spiced golden milk. Both are caffeine free and give you a natural boost of energy.
  3. Dilute your caffeine. Water it down, add in additional nut milk.
  4. Keep the ingredients in mind. When was the last time, you looked at the ingredient list of your caffeinated drinks? It’s safe to say that it has probably been a while (if ever). You probably won't be able to pronounce some of the gibberish printed, but google some of the items and side effects. It was enough to scare all 3 of our co-founders into giving the stuff up for good.
Most importantly, don't feel pressured to eliminate caffeine 100% until you are ready. Gradually wean yourself off it later in the day.  We promise you that over time, you will start to feel so much healthier - physically and mentally.
